LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 8, 2004) -- A Kentucky holiday tradition is back with a twist for 2004. Putting a new spin on their annual holiday greeting card sales campaign, this season University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital will sell limited-edition, self-adhesive holiday gift tags featuring designs by young patients.

Five UK Children’s Hospital patients created artwork for the gift tags. Billy Fitch, 12, of Stamping Ground; Jazmin Galicia, 10, of Lexington; Taylor Lake, 9, of Berea; Tonika Spaulding, 6, of Louisville; and Briana Wilhite, 7, of Lexington, created the artwork for the gift tags.

In addition to the newly designed gift tags, classic holiday cards featuring designs created by UK Children’s Hospital patients in previous years will be available for the 2004 season.

Loralyn Cecil, community relations manager for UK Children’s Hospital Fund Development, said, “Our patients, their families, and our staff and volunteers all look forward to the holiday art program. This year when we called one little girl to let her know her artwork had been for a gift tag, we could hear her screaming with excitement in the background. Of all the events that we do to raise money for UK Children's Hospital, I think this one raises the spirits of patients and friends of the hospital the most.”

“We appreciate all the people who give to help our hospital. With these funds we are able to send our nurses to continuing educational courses, buy specialized pediatric medical equipment, purchase resources to teach children about their medical needs, and even provide entertainment for patients while they are in the hospital,” said Sherry Holmes, director of nursing for UK Children’s Hospital.

Gift tags are available at Kroger grocery stores in Lexington and throughout the Central Kentucky area, and retail for $5 per package of 30 self-adhesive tags.

The classic holiday cards are available at Kennedy’s Bookstore on South Limestone and Peggy’s Gifts on Clay Avenue. Cards are $4 per package of 14. All proceeds benefit UK Children’s Hospital.

Gift tags and cards may also be ordered through the UK Children’s Hospital Fund Development Office. For more information, contact Meghan McGee or Erin Oakley at (859) 257-1121.
