LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 14, 2004) -- The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees today named David J. Bettez director of the UK Office of International Programs.

A Lexingtonian with a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Notre Dame, Bettez’ master’s and doctoral graduate work at UK focused on post-1848 European diplomatic history. He will manage an office that oversees the education of some 1,500 international students and scholars.

Bettez used the services of the Office of International Programs to study abroad himself in 1979 to study in The Netherlands at The Hague Academy of International Law. In 1980-81, he conducted dissertation research in Paris, France; London, England; and Bonn, Germany.

He served as a volunteer study abroad adviser, then became assistant director of the office until December 1986, leaving to live abroad in Winchester, England, for two years. He returned to the study abroad advising program in the Office of International Affairs in 1998. Later, he served as assistant director of study abroad and exchange programs, then as director of study abroad and external scholarships.

Bettez received a Fulbright Grant for International Education Administrators and a German Academic Exchange Service grant to go to Germany.

He is a member of the Lexington-Fayette County Sister Cities Commission and serves on the board and steering committee of the Kentucky Institute for International Studies. He is also a member of the National Association for Study Abroad, the Association of International Educators, and the Association of International Education Administrators, and is president of the Kentucky Council on International Education.
