LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 21, 2004) -- Trish Gibson, a graduate student in the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky, has been awarded the fourth annual $12,000 Lexington Herald-Leader Fellowship for the 2005-2006 academic year.

The fellowship will cover the period from Aug. 1, 2005, through May 31, 2006.

Gibson was recommended for the fellowship by Frank Scott, director of graduate studies for the Gatton College of Business and Economics’ Economics Department.

A 2002 graduate of Berea College, where she majored in international studies and minored in Spanish, Gibson came to UK in 2003 to pursue dual master’s degrees in international development and economics. She spent her freshman year at the University of Evansville.

In 2003, she won the Kentucky Political Science Association’s Abdul H. Rifai Award for Best Undergraduate Thesis, and she also was named a Humanity in Action Fellow.

She served as an assistant to the coordinator of international initiatives for the Appalachian College Association in Berea from February to August 2003, prior to beginning her studies at UK.

While a student at Berea, Gibson spent summer internships with the city foreign relations department in Kaunas, Lithuania, and in the state sanitary inspectorate for the ministry of labor, health and social affairs for the Republic of Georgia.
