LEXINGTON,
Ky. (Jan. 18, 2004) -- The University
of Kentucky Police Department has issued
a “Campus
Safety Alert” following a series of
armed robberies and one shooting which occurred
in areas near the campus early Sunday morning,
Jan. 18.
On
Sunday at around 2:15 a.m., a UK student reported
that he had been shot. The shooting occurred in
the area of Audubon and Forest Park near the Delta
Tau Delta fraternity house. The victim and a passenger,
also a UK student, were in a motor vehicle when
an unknown male approached the passenger side of
the vehicle and fired one shot through the passenger
window, striking the victim. The suspect is described
as follows:

Suspect was armed with a dark colored 9mm handgun.
Approximately
35 minutes later, the same suspect was reported
to have committed an armed robbery of a UK student
in the 400 block of East Maxwell Street. The suspect
robbed the victim of his wallet and brown corduroy
jacket.
Less
than 30 minutes after the second incident, a third
incident was reported to occur on State Street
when two Hispanic males robbed two UK students
of a cell phone and a brown Carhartt jacket. One
of the suspects matched the above description.
The second suspect was described as:

Until
the suspects are apprehended, UK Police remind
all members of the campus community to take the
following precautions to protect yourself:
- After
dark, DO NOT travel alone. While on campus, use
the campus bus service or the SGA Escort Service.
Call the UK Police if these services are not
available.
- Travel
on well-lighted main thoroughfares with lots
of pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic.
- Always
be aware of your surroundings and any activity
or persons that seem out of place.
- Only
carry a minimal amount of cash.
If
you are accosted, COMPLY with the demands of
your assailant and report the incident immediately
to police by dialing 911.
