LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 6, 2004) -- Dennis E. Doherty, M.D., professor and chief, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and medical director of Respiratory Care Services, UK Hospital, has taken three leadership positions in his field.

Doherty was elected by his peers to the National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care (NAMDRC) board of directors.

NAMDRC is a national organization of physicians whose mission is to educate its members and address regulatory, legislative and payment issues that relate to the delivery of health care to patients with respiratory disorders. Doherty will serve a three-year term on the board.

He was appointed chairman of the National Lung Health Education Program (NLHEP). He previously had served as co-chair of the program for four years.

NLHEP is a health care initiative designed to identify and to treat patients in the early stages of Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COPD), chronic obstructive bronchitis and related emphysema.

Doherty also joined the National Respiratory Training Center (NRTC) for a three year term on its board of directors.

NRTC is an independent, non-profit educational organization committed to improving the health of patients with respiratory and allergic diseases by enhancing the knowledge and skills of health professionals who care for them.
