Brockopp has influenced the growth of women in

researcher at UK Hospital, Brockopp was credited
with giving many nursing staff members the opportunity
to develop and implement clinical research projects.
She wrote the award-winning textbook “Fundamentals
of Nursing Research,” extending her influence
nationally to the growth and development of young
women in nursing careers.

LEXINGTON,
Ky. (March 24, 2004) -- The
University of Kentucky Women’s Forum has
presented its 11th annual Sarah Bennett Holmes
Award to Dorothy Brockopp, professor and assistant
dean for undergraduate studies in the UK College
of Nursing and chair of the UK President’s
Commission on Women.
Brockopp
and 11 other nominees were recognized during a
luncheon today at the UK Student Center. The award,
named for a former distinguished dean of women
at UK, is granted to a woman working at the university
who promotes the growth and well-being of other
women at UK and in Kentucky.
“This
is a wonderful honor, and I thank my colleagues
Julie Sebastian and Marcia Stanhope for nominating
me,” Brockopp said. “Just to be a member
of this impressive group of nominees is a great
privilege.”
Since
joining UK in 1988, Brockopp has served as associate
director of the Markey Cancer Center, nurse researcher
for UK Hospital, and associate director of the
Office of International Affairs.

women in nursing careers. She also is active in
advising students.
As
chair of the President’s Commission on Women,
Brockopp has helped facilitate a number of projects
focused on improving the campus environment for
women students and employees of the university.
She also has an impressive research record in the
area of pain management and is involved in numerous
professional and civic activities.
“We
are very pleased to present this award to Dr. Brockopp,” said
Sue Scheff, chair of UK Women’s Forum. “She
exhibits the same commendable characteristics demonstrated
by Sarah Bennett Holmes – championing the
rights of women and inspiring them to pursue their
educational and career goals, even in the face
of adversity.”
As
winner of the Sarah Bennett Holmes Award, Brockopp
received a plaque and $1,000.
