LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 24, 2004) -- The University of Kentucky Women’s Forum has presented its 11th annual Sarah Bennett Holmes Award to Dorothy Brockopp, professor and assistant dean for undergraduate studies in the UK College of Nursing and chair of the UK President’s Commission on Women.

Brockopp and 11 other nominees were recognized during a luncheon today at the UK Student Center. The award, named for a former distinguished dean of women at UK, is granted to a woman working at the university who promotes the growth and well-being of other women at UK and in Kentucky.

“This is a wonderful honor, and I thank my colleagues Julie Sebastian and Marcia Stanhope for nominating me,” Brockopp said. “Just to be a member of this impressive group of nominees is a great privilege.”

Since joining UK in 1988, Brockopp has served as associate director of the Markey Cancer Center, nurse researcher for UK Hospital, and associate director of the Office of International Affairs.

She also has an impressive research record in the area of pain management and is involved in numerous professional and civic activities.

“We are very pleased to present this award to Dr. Brockopp,” said Sue Scheff, chair of UK Women’s Forum. “She exhibits the same commendable characteristics demonstrated by Sarah Bennett Holmes – championing the rights of women and inspiring them to pursue their educational and career goals, even in the face of adversity.”
