LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 22, 2004) -- The University of Kentucky College of Education is partnering for the fifth year with several community organizations to support the Books for Children holiday season drive.

From now until Dec. 8, the Books for Children program is accepting donations of new books for children from infancy through 12 years of age. The Books for Children committee also is accepting cash donations.

The purpose of this community program is to promote literacy and a love for reading through the ownership of books, said Karen Sandberg, director of the drive. “We want to get books into the hands of all children,” she said.

Books are requested by several community agencies that serve children in Fayette and Jessamine counties. The agencies then distribute the books to children or through a variety of literacy programs. Some organizations that have benefited are The Nest, Nathaniel Mission, Head Start, Step By Step, Hispanic Center, Grace Coleman Center, Early Learning Village, and Family Resource Centers affiliated with Fayette County Schools.

College of Education Collection points are the Dean’s Office, 103 Dickey Hall; Dickey Hall student lounge; in front of the office of the Collaborative Center for Literacy Development Office in Taylor Education; and in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling on the second floor of Taylor Education Building.

For more information regarding the drive, call (859) 277-6176. To make a cash donation, send checks to Books for Children, c/o SHUMC, 2356 Harrodsburg Rd., Lexington, KY 40503.
