LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 23, 2004) -- Dee Hill is a University of Kentucky graduate student who takes the news seriously. After watching a recent television news story about the Catholic Action Center in downtown Lexington needing donations of blankets and heavy winter clothes to help the homeless this year, he decided to help.

Hill, a second year graduate student in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program in the College of Agriculture, and several other UK students decided to conduct a benefit drive over the holidays called “Blankets or Bucks” to help the center meet the needs of the homeless. Hill is president of the UK chapter of the Kentucky Student Association of Family Relations (KSAFR).

Students are collecting blankets, winter clothing and cash donations to buy blankets or clothing throughout the holidays.

A Vine Grove native who graduated from North Hardin High School and earned his bachelor’s degree at Transylvania University, Hill said the blankets or donations are tax deductible. Donors will receive a receipt from KSAFR.

He encouraged donors to call him directly at (859) 536-4011 to arrange delivery of blankets or clothing. “I'll just go get them myself if that is most convenient for the donor,” he said. Donations also may be dropped off at the Women’s Studies Office, 112 Breckinridge Hall, between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily through Dec. 15.

Donors may also make contributions through an online system known as PayPal at the KSAFR Web site at www.uky.edu/studentorgs/KSAFR.

One of the early donations to the program came from Miguel Carlin, a UK sophomore from Union and a graduate of the Larry A. Ryle High School in Boone County. Carlin asked his mother to buy a new blanket and bring it to him to contribute to the drive. A sophomore student majoring in public service and leadership in the College of Agriculture, Carlin is volunteering in the Blankets or Bucks drive.

“This kind of thing just starts your day off right,” Carlin said. “It feels really good, especially when you’re helping the homeless right here in Lexington, and you can actually see where your contributions are going.”

“When people receive help from something like the Catholic Action Center, they feel like they are not as alone as before,” Hill noted. “The help is so very much appreciated. “

Persons who want further information about the Blankets or Bucks program may contact Hill by e-mail at dphill2@uky.edu or Carlin at cmcarl2@uky.edu or call (859) 323-3559.
