LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 7, 2004) -- The Graduate School at the University of Kentucky recently honored the participants in its 2004 Kentucky Young Scientist Summer Research Program (KYSS).

The KYSS program, which began in 1997, is an eight-week program created to strengthen research and graduate education at UK by providing summer research opportunities for diverse and other under-represented groups in the life, medical and social sciences.

“I am so proud of these students and the chances they are taking,” said Jeannine Blackwell, dean of the UK Graduate School. “This program presents an exciting opportunity and opens many doors for these students. They are on the cutting edge of where science will be this century.”

Participating in this year’s program were Dorothy Marie Hargis, who attends Pikeville College; Becky Barrick, who attends Centre College; Lloyd J. Asher, who attends Eastern Kentucky University; Tonya Jernigan, who attends Transylvania University; David Lambert, who attends Georgetown College; Sybil Yeboah, who attends Kentucky State University; Kevin White, who attends Transylvania University; Bridgette Thacker, who attends Pikeville College; Neomia Hagans, who attends UK; Falalo Tomray, who attends Kentucky State University; and Laura Buchanan, who attends UK.

The students were chosen to participate out of a pool of 35. Each student received a stipend of $3,500.
