LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 15, 2004) -- University of Kentucky volunteers today launched the massive undertaking of contacting the school’s 11,000 employees about making contributions to United Way of the Bluegrass. More than 400 volunteers attended the traditional kickoff of the UK United Way campaign, a luncheon in the UK Student Center Grand Ballroom.

Chair of the 2004 campaign, Sandra Chambers, announced UK’s fund-raising goal of $420,000. She also announced that early donations by UK retirees and others totaled $68,000 or about 16 percent of the goal.

“We have great confidence in our UK family for a successful campaign,” said Chambers. “ UK employees, retirees and students have traditionally demonstrated great generosity with their United Way giving.”

Other speakers included Kathy Plomin, president and chief professional officer of United Way of the Bluegrass and Alan Stein, Lexington Legends’ president and chairman of the United Way of the Bluegrass Board of Directors.
