LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 2, 2005) -- University of Kentucky’s Art Department is home to a number of major talents, and you can see for yourself the quality of the work at its annual Faculty Show. The exhibition, which began Jan. 28 with an opening reception in the artists’ honor, is on display through Feb. 12 at UK’s Tuska Gallery in the Fine Arts Building.
Sixteen faculty members will showcase approximately 40 works of art, including pieces from Arturo Sandoval, Ross Zirkle, Dennis “Bones” Carpenter, Ruth Adams, Gerry Ferstman, Heather Freeman, and Bobby Scroggins, just to name a few. The pieces are from a variety of media, such as painting, ceramics, printmaking, photography, fiber and wood.
Visitors to the exhibit will see the diversity of the Art Department’s faculty, as items in the show present a variety of viewpoints and perspectives. Ferstman and Sandoval have pieces derived from their ruminations on the status of Iraq. Freeman’s work displays her ease with emerging digital media and its use in creating introspective self-portraits. Adams uses older photographic technology, like Polaroid prints, in her entries from a larger series inspired by her recent treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Gestural prints created by Zirkle situate the human body with intertwining layers of meaning, implicating graphic arts, science and mathematics. Jim Foose has contributed paintings of lyrical and colorful landscapes, while Carpenter’s work maps his travels across space and time in a more abstract and photographical manner.
Admission to the Faculty Show is free and open to the public. You can view the exhibit noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, contact Benjamin Withers at (859) 257-2727.
