LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 9, 2005) -- University of Kentucky College of Dentistry third-year student, Shane Sykes, was recently awarded the American Dental Education Association (ADEA)/Listerine® Preventive Dentistry Scholarship for 2005. It is a $2,500 scholarship awarded nationally to 12 recipients to support pre-doctoral dental students who have demonstrated academic excellence in preventive dentistry.
“Receiving the ADEA/Listerine Preventive Dentistry Scholarship is a great benefit both personally and professionally,” said Sykes. “It is a tremendous honor to be selected from among so many excellent students. The ADEA and Listerine both do a lot to benefit dental students, and I am grateful for their generosity in awarding me this scholarship."
As a recipient, Sykes was invited as a special guest at the 82 nd ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition in Baltimore, Md., on March 6.
Candidates for the scholarship must be enrolled full-time at a U.S. dental school, possess a superior academic record, demonstrate achievement in the area of preventive dentistry, and be an individual member of the ADEA.

Founded in 1962, the UK College of Dentistry is recognized as one of the nation's outstanding dental institutions. In addition to the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, the college offers postdoctoral programs in six fields of study: General Practice Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orofacial Pain, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Periodontics. Graduate students in Orofacial Pain, Orthodontics and Periodontics receive a Master of Science degree from the UK Graduate School and a specialty certificate.
