Howard speaks nationally on emergency nursing, including topics such as firearm safety, pediatric issues in emergency departments, and neurological emergency department issues. She is a contributing author to many prestigious nursing journals, including the International Journal of Trauma Nursing, Journal of Emergency Nursing, and also is a contributing author in Sheehy’s Emergency Nursing Principles and Practices (4th and 5th editions) and the ENA’s CEN ® Review Manual for emergency nursing certification.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 3, 2005) -- Patricia Kunz Howard has been named president for the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). ENA is the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and injury prevention.
Howard is the University of Kentucky Hospital Emergency Department staff development specialist and clinical research protocol manager for cardiovascular nursing, UK College of Nursing. She also is EMS training coordinator for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Division of Fire and Emergency Services.
Howard is a member of the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services' EMS-C subcommittee and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals Steering Committee. Howard has served on the ENA board since 2000, and is a member of the Emergency Nurses Association Foundation Management Board. She also serves as the chair of the Kentucky State Council of ENA’s pediatric committee and is a member of the council’s education committee. She has been a member of ENA since 1985, and is a member of the Bluegrass Chapter.
A licensed registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Howard earned her associate degree in nursing in 1978 from Salem College, W.Va. She received a Bachelor of Science in nursing in 1983 and a Master of Science in 1990 from the University of Kentucky. Howard received her doctoral degree in 2004 from the UK College of Nursing. Howard also is a member of the Delta Psi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the national nursing honor society, and the National Association of EMS Educators.
