Campbell specializes in the social and political history of the United States. He is the author of two books, "The Politics of Despair: Power and Resistance in the Tobacco Wars" (1993), and "Short of the Glory: The Fall and Redemption of Edward F. Prichard, Jr." (1998). He has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and has been featured on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition." He earned his doctorate in history at Duke University in 1988.
