LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 25, 2005) -- Lan Chi Luu and Elizabeth C. Konz, both doctoral candidates in the University of Kentucky Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences , have each been awarded Clinical Research Feasibility Funds (CReFF) through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Research Resources and the UK General Clinical Research Center. They will each receive an award of $20,000 to support pilot research leading to data for future NIH or other peer-reviewed grant proposals. Luu and Konz are mentored by Edward J. Kasarskis and James W. Anderson, respectively.

The goal of the CReFF program is to promote clinical research and encourage junior investigators to pursue patient-oriented research careers. Junior faculty members with ranks equal to or less than assistant professor or senior faculty applying for support of research that represents a clear change in research career path may apply. The program seeks to lead investigators to future clinical research grant support from the NIH.

“This program is a resource for young faculty seeking to begin their research careers,” said Nancy Kukilinsky, UK GCRC administrative director. “Programs such as this are crucial to building on the university’s already strong clinical research enterprise.”
