LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 26, 2005) -- Are you a female interested in helping young women succeed? Would you like to be a positive role model to young girls interested in careers in scientific research?

The University of Kentucky Girls in Research program is designed to encourage young women to pursue careers in scientific research. Each girl travels to UK for a week of hands-on research experience, and is matched with at least two adult mentors. The program is in need of mentors interested in serving as positive role models for the students.

Potential mentors may be female researchers, faculty scientists or doctoral students who will be at UK for the next three years, or any woman who would like to guide and mentor a young girl. Mentoring is critical to the success of the Girls in Research program and the future academic and career success of the young participants.

Faculty and students are encouraged to share this information with others in their departments. For more information or to apply, contact Sondra Floyd at 257-4401 or sondrafloyd@uky.edu. Applications must be received by May 1, 2005.
