LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 4, 2005) -- The deadline has been extended for current fifth grade girls to apply for the University of Kentucky Girls in Research program.

Applications are now due March 20, 2005.

The Girls in Research program is a free educational program for girls interested in science. Students are provided with a $100 stipend each summer and a $1,000 stipend at the end of the three-year program. It is very structured, with professional staff supervising students at all times.

The experience includes a week-long camp at UK for three consecutive summers (after fifth grade, sixth grade, and seventh grade). The program also includes five Saturday academies throughout each school year at participants’ local community colleges. The girls also receive mentoring from UK and community leaders.

Girls from the following counties are encouraged to apply: Bell, Breathitt, Clay, Floyd, Harlan, Jackson, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Rockcastle, Whitley and Wolfe.

Applicants should be girls currently in fifth grade who are interested in science. To obtain an application or more information, contact Sondra Floyd at (859) 257-4401 or at sondrafloyd@uky.edu. Applications can also be downloaded.
