LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 11, 2005) -- The School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky is offering a Dow Jones Urban Journalism Workshop for High School Students. The workshop will be held June 14-24. An application and additional information are available on the school’s Web site. The application deadline for those interested in applying is March 31.

Workshop participants will produce a newspaper focused on minority achievement. The students will interview local minority entrepreneurs and write stories profiling them and their accomplishments. Participants also will visit the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and several area newspapers.

Students of African-American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaskan Native descent are encouraged to apply. Journalism experience is not required, but students should have good writing skills, a willingness to learn, and a sincere desire to explore a career in journalism. This program is part of a national effort to increase the number of minorities in newspaper newsrooms.

The primary sponsor for the workshop is the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund. Other sponsors include the Lexington Herald-Leader, the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Scripps Howard Foundation, the UK Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the UK Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education.
