LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 2, 2005) -- University of Kentucky professor of health services management, Joel Lee has been appointed by the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology to the 2005 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that an organization in the United States can receive.

As an Examiner, Lee is responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the award. All members of the board must take part in a preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the scoring and evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award. Awards may be given annually in each of five categories: Manufacturing, Service, Small Business, Education and Health Care.

Joel Lee completed his Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health degrees in health services administration and organization at the University of Texas School of Public Health. He has served in a variety of academic positions in the formation of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health as well as the university's undergraduate and graduate degrees in health administration. Lee has served on a number of association boards and advisory committees including the Board of Directors of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration(AUPHA), and the Kentucky Hospital Association-affiliated Kentucky Health Care Strategy Forum. 

Lee is a past chair of the Association of Schools of Public Health, Health Services Administration Council, and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration Public Health Management, Strategic Health Planning, Managed Care, and Doctoral Education Faculty Forums, and served as a member of the AUPHA Undergraduate Task Force. 

He has served on a variety of American College of Health Care Executives committees and has been reappointed to the Kentucky ACHE Regent's Advisory Board for over 16 years.  Lee is a recipient of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association "Great Teacher" Award and the College of Health Sciences’ Kingston Award for Creativity in Teaching.
