LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 8, 2005) -- University of Kentucky anthropology and behavioral science professor John van Willigen today received the William B. Sturgill Award at the university’s 138th commencement.
The annual award, which includes a $2,000 prize, recognizes a full-time UK faculty member for outstanding contributions to graduate education at UK. It was established by William B. Sturgill, former chairman of the UK Board of Trustees.
Van Willigen was cited for his generosity of time, contacts and suggestions for graduate and doctoral students. He was also recognized because a 2004 external evaluation cited his leadership, his authoring of a major textbook on applied anthropology and his service of adviser to a high proportion of anthropology graduate students.
Van Willigen is a previous winner of UK’s Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and of the Standard Oil Distinguished Teaching Award at the University of Wisconsin at Parkside. He also has been recognized by the Society for Applied Anthropology and the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology.
