LEXINGTON, KY -- (Nov. 11, 1999) -- Physicians
from two national medical universities in China have arranged to come to Kentucky to
collaborate with physicians and researchers at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical
Center. A representative from Shandong Medical University in Ji nan, Shandong,
will arrive this year, and a representative from West China University of Medical Sciences
in Chengdu, Sichuan, will come next fall.
These academic exchanges are part of two international agreements recently signed
between the Medical Center and the Chinese institutions. Earlier this year, James W.
Holsinger Jr., M.D., Ph.D., chancellor of the Medical Center, and Phyllis J. Nash, Ed.D.,
vice chancellor of academic and student affairs of the Medical Center, traveled to China
to formalize the agreements.
"International agreements such as these provide opportunities to learn new
research techniques and form new research collaborations," Holsinger said.
An agreement to renew an academic exchange for faculty and students was signed with
Shandong Medical University. The Medical Center has had exchange agreements with Shandong
Medical University for about 10 years.
A new agreement for student and faculty exchanges as well as collaborative research
efforts was signed with West China University of Medical Sciences.
"We anticipate the exchange of faculty, staff and students will bring benefit to
all three universities and countries," Nash said.
