LEXINGTON, KY (June 6, 1999) -- The University
of Kentucky Childrens Hospital was the beneficiary for the 12th year of
the annual Childrens Miracle Network campaign to raise funds for 170 childrens
hospitals across North America. The highlight of the campaign, "CMN Champions
Show" television broadcast, raised $797,834 for UK Childrens Hospital. This
brings the total of the 12-year fund-raising effort to $5.7 million. The worlds
largest television fund-raiser, "CMN Champions Show," was broadcast live for 21
hours on June 5-6 from Walt Disney World and Lexington on WKYT-TV (Lexington) and WYMT-TV
(Hazard).
During the broadcasts local segments, many of UKs young patients were
featured as "champions" because of the victories they have won, often facing
incredible odds and surviving life-threatening situations. The broadcast also recognized
many people who champion children, such as families, health professionals, individuals,
volunteers, donors, and sports celebrities.
Unique among national fund-raisers, all money raised in Kentucky stays in Kentucky to
benefit the UK Childrens Hospital. Doug Flynn, former UK and major league baseball
player, was the 1999 honorary chairman.
