LEXINGTON, KY (Dec. 22, 1999) The
Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine has received
funding to spread the word in the Hispanic community about the Kentucky Childrens
Insurance Program (KCHIP). A team of bilingual outreach workers will identify Hispanic
families who have children between the ages of 1 and 19. Outreach activities include
information booths at stores, church functions and Cardinal Valley and Russell Cave
elementary schools, as well as fliers distributed at area businesses. The funding comes
from a sub-contract from the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department.
"A lot of Hispanic children out there qualify for this program but the parents may
not be aware that KCHIP is available because they cant speak English," said
Rosa Martin, Kentucky Farmworker Health Program outreach coordinator.
Outreach workers explain the qualifications of the programs and help Hispanic families
fill out the English application. Spanish applications should be available in January. |
