LEXINGTON, KY (Nov. 10, 1999)- Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) has presented the University of Kentucky Hospital with the annual Julie McGee Lamberth Award in recognition of the Hospital's life-saving efforts through organ and tissue donation.

"This past year, the work that took place at University of Kentucky Hospital was just phenomenal," said Paul O'Flynn, executive director of KODA, before presenting the award. "It allowed KODA to have one of its best years ever."

Bruce A. Lucas, M.D., KODA president and director of the kidney transplant program and professor of surgery in the UK College of Medicine, said he was proud his home institution received the award.

"For organ transplantation in Kentucky and at the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville to survive we must have a successful organ donor program at the University of Kentucky," Lucas said.

The generosity of 27 families at UK Hospital resulted in life-saving transplants for 87 people. About 400 people are on waiting lists in Kentucky.

The Julie McGee Lamberth Award was named after an organ donor and is given annually to a hospital that has shown commitment to organ and tissue donation.
