LEXINGTON, KY (Sept. 13, 1999)--The University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center today held a ceremonial groundbreaking at the new site for Kentucky Clinic North. The community-oriented clinic, which will continue to provide primary care in a medically underserved area of Lexington, is located at the corner of East Third Street and Elm Tree Lane. Kentucky Clinic North currently is located at its interim site on Third Street, across from the fire station. Expected completion is April 2000.

Initial funds to develop the new clinic came from a one-time Medicaid payment awarded to UK Hospital in 1995. Medicaid allows states to match federal funds to extend care to medically underserved populations. The development of the clinic in an underserved area of Lexington is in line with the purposes of these funds.

The goal of establishing a clinic for primary care reflects UK’s commitment to improve the health status of underserved residents of Lexington. It also increases the University’s community involvement by providing an opportunity to bring many of its programs closer to neighborhoods that do not have convenient access to its resources.

The new facility will be operated by Health Associates of Kentucky and leased from Elm Tree Medical Plaza, LLC.

Kentucky Clinic North will be a 9,600-square-foot facility with 11 exam rooms, including four dental exam chairs, a patient education room, a laboratory, X-ray and EKG capabilities. The full-service clinic will be staffed by Travis Lawson, M.D., a primary care physician and medical director of the clinic, a nurse practitioner, a dentist, a pharmacist, a nurse, medical assistants, and receptionists. A caseworker from the Kentucky Department of Social Insurance also will be on staff. With wellness as a high priority, the UK Chandler Medical Center, in the future, also will support a health education program geared to prevention. The clinic will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All of the services to be offered in the permanent site have not been finalized. Area residents will be actively involved in the further development of Kentucky Clinic North and the services provided.

Future initiatives may include staffing the clinic with more physicians and other health professionals. Extended hours are planned as the demand for patient care increases. UK will work with residents of the underserved area to identify services that residents of the area use or need, but may have difficulty accessing.
