LEXINGTON, KY (Feb. 2, 1999) A love of
books begins even before a child can recite the ABCs. The University of Kentucky College
of Medicines Pediatrics Club is launching a program to encourage young patients to
read, and their parents to read to them.
UK Pediatrics Clinic patients from 6 months to 5 years of age will receive a book
during their well-child checkups.
The Pediatrics Club organized the program with a book credit for 1,500 books from the
national Reach Out and Read Program, along with contributions from the Childrens
Miracle Network, the UK Childrens Hospital, the Lexington Herald-Leader and Kentucky
Utilities.

child, the parent was four times more likely to read a book to the child.
"The exciting thing about this grant is that it reflects that the students who are
our next generation of doctors already recognize the importance of addressing more than
the medical aspect of the patients health," said Donna Grigsby, M.D., assistant
professor of pediatrics and the clubs adviser. |
