LEXINGTON, KY (May 17, 1999)--The University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, in collaboration with St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead and the Trover Foundation in Madisonville, will establish UK Center for Rural Health sites in Morehead and Madisonville. The partnership and the expansion of the Center for Rural Health will increase substantially the efforts of meeting the rural health care needs of Kentuckians.

The Kentucky Legislature established the UK Center for Rural Health in 1990 and charged it with a comprehensive statewide mission. This action reflected legislators’ concerns with the chronic shortage of health professionals in rural areas, the poor health status of many rural residents, and the importance of local availability of quality health care services to communities.

The Center for Rural Health’s activities include collecting statistical information and conducting research about rural health care in Kentucky; evaluating and promoting health policy issues; establishing family practice medicine residencies in rural areas of the state; operating training programs for needed health care professionals; and collaborating with rural communities to develop more effective health care services.

The initial UK Center for Rural Health site was established in Hazard in 1990. Formation of the sites at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead and Trover Foundation in Madisonville emphasizes the ongoing health care needs in all areas of rural Kentucky. The Hazard center has several educational programs, including a family practice residency program, as well as nurse practitioner, physical therapy and clinical laboratory sciences programs.

The leadership role that St. Claire Medical Center has demonstrated in rural health care in Northeastern Kentucky over the past 35 years made it an ideal partner for this expansion. The UK Chandler Medical Center and St. Claire Medical Center already are partners with Morehead State University, providing training programs for physician assistants and nurse practitioners, as well as other student and practitioner support services. UK has established residency programs at St. Claire in surgery, internal medicine, pathology, family practice and clinical pharmacy.

Loman Trover, M.D. and Faull Trover, M.D. founded Trover Clinic in 1953. The Trover Foundation, becoming integrated as a health care delivery system in 1994, encompasses a regional medical center, Trover Clinic, an educational division and Trover Health Plans.
