LEXINGTON, KY (July 9, 1999) – The University of Kentucky Hospital is ranked in the top 50 in the country in cancer, urology and gynecology care in U.S. News & World Report’s 10th annual guide to America’s Best Hospitals, on newsstands Monday, July 12.

UK Hospital’s Markey Cancer Center is rated 17th in the country for cancer care; UK’s urology program is ranked 28th; and UK’s gynecology program is ranked 47th in the nation.

"The U.S. News ranking of three of our programs is highly complimentary, and we want to recognize the leadership of our physicians in each of these areas as well as the outstanding professional staff who are a part of the health care team," said Frank Butler, vice chancellor for health systems and planning, UK Chandler Medical Center, and director of UK Hospital. "We believe the recognition of these particular programs is representative of the quality of all of our patient care programs."

America’s Best Hospitals is a resource for consumers who are seeking the best care in the diagnosis, treatment and management of a difficult medical problem. U.S. News ranks the top 50 hospitals in the diagnosis, treatment and management of a difficult medical problem.

This year, U.S. News ranks the top 50 hospitals in 16 specialties, giving data on 188 hospitals. The rankings were drawn from 1,881 hospitals (of 6,299 in the country) that meet the U.S. News criteria.

Most hospitals rated are tertiary care hospitals – major medical centers, usually teaching institutions, that provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art care. However, some that are rated are not teaching hospitals.

The specialties in which UK was ranked were assessed on reputation, death rate and a set of other medical data.
