LEXINGTON, KY (Sept. 17, 2001) -- A
free public forum – sponsored by the Kentucky Spinal Cord and
Head Injury Research Trust, the Spinal Cord and Brain Injury
Research Center at the University of Kentucky College of
Medicine,
and Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital – will provide
information about new clinical advances in treatment and
rehabilitation and the latest research in spinal cord and head
injuries. The forum
will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Sept. 27 at Cardinal Hill
Rehabilitation Hospital.
Researchers and clinicians at the
public forum will discuss technologies that improve grasping
ability of the hands in tetraplegics, technologies that allow
spinal cord-injured individuals to stand for a limited time, and
basic research on gene therapy and stem cell therapy to repair
damaged spinal cord tissue and enhance regeneration of nerves.
Speakers include John Shaw, M.D., assistant clinical
professor in the Department of Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery at
University of Louisville; Ronald J. Triolo, Ph.D., assistant
professor of orthopaedics and biomedical engineering at Case
Western Reserve University; George M. Smith, Ph.D., associate
professor, Department of Physiology, UK College of Medicine; and
Scott Whittemore, Ph.D., Henry D. Garretson Professor of Spinal
Cord Injury Research, Department of Neurological Surgery,
University of Louisville.
