Pharmacy adds immunization certification to curriculum

Pharmacy adds immunization certification to curriculum

To help make sure more American adults receive immunizations, pharmacists trained at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy will be certified to provide immunizations as part of the required curriculum for third-year students.

Although Kentucky law has allowed pharmacists to provide immunizations for three years, few pharmacists are trained in this area. The UK College of Pharmacy is one of the first schools in the country to offer an immunization program and certify students for immunization delivery.

"By providing immunizations, pharmacists will not be replacing any other health professional," said William Lubawy, interim dean of the UK College of Pharmacy. "Instead, pharmacists will be able to provide immunization programs with greater access to rural and underserved areas."

The UK College of Pharmacy has added the immunization program to its required curriculum for third-year students. The college also is in the process of developing an immunization clerkship.

The program consists of 10 lecture hours and one clinic, where students practice giving injections - first to oranges, then one another. The clinics are provided in conjunction with the American Pharmaceutical Association.
