National bridal designer shows her latest at UK

Nationally known bridal gown designer and Kentucky native Melissa Sweet will show her latest fashions at UK at 7 p.m. April 16 in the Student Center's Worsham Theater. The show, sponsored by the UK Merchandising and Textiles Club, will raise funds to send UK textiles and merchandising students to New York this summer.

"New York is the center of the fashion industry, and a trip there will allow our students to visit trade shows and industry giants," said Vanessa Wickliffe, a professor in the Department of Interior Design, Merchandising and Textiles and adviser to the club. "It is a way to take their education to a new level and really see their field at work."

Melissa Sweet, center, will return to her native Kentucky to give a show at UK April 16.

Sweet, a native of Lawrenceburg and formerly of Lexington and Louisville, learned to sew from her grandmother at age 7 and created her first bridal gown when she was 19. She studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York and graduated from the Bauder Fashion College in Atlanta. She has worked with designers such as Penelope, Frivole Couture and Cynthia Rowley and is one of two designers on the advisory board of The Knot, the largest international wedding brand. Her collection of gowns, the Melissa Sweet Bridal Collection, was launched in 1996 and has outsold many established lines, making the young designer one of the favorites of boutiques and salons across the United States and Canada. Sweet also designs for Currie-Bonner for Bridesmaids, a line she purchased in late 1997, and her own new line for bridesmaids, MSBC, which debuted in fall 1999. She also operates salons in Atlanta, Denver and New York. She and husband Addison Palmore, a Lexington native and president of the company, are headquarter and live in Atlanta.

Tickets for the bridal fashion show are $20 for the general public and $15 for students and are available at the University's Student Center ticket office or by calling 257-8427.
