James Campbell, Music and director of Percussion Studies, has taken first place in the Percussive Arts Society (PAS) 2006 Composition Contest. This is the 32nd annual competition. As the contest’s first place winner, Campbell receives a cash award and guaranteed publication with HoneyRock Publishing of Everett, Pa. The award-winning composition will also serve as the required work for the finals of the PAS International Solo Collegiate Percussion Competition to be held this November in Columbus, Ohio.

Rich Gates, Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, reports the department’s Wildcat Pulling Team earned Third Place Overall in the 2005 International Quarter-Scale Tractor Design competition sponsored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. The competition requires student proficiency in all aspects of developing a product for the marketplace.

Thomas R. Guskey, Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, released his most recent book, “Benjamin S. Bloom: Portraits of an Educator,” on Sept. 1 by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. Bloom was one of the most prominent and most influential educational researchers and scholars of the past century. The book includes analyses of some of Bloom's most prominent works, along with a series personal stories by former students and colleagues of experiences they shared with Bloom.

Ted Hasselbring, Assistive Technology, finished serving on an advisory panel to the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices. Work was completed on a publication called “Reading to Achieve: A Governor's Guide to Adolescent Literacy,” which will be released to the nation's governors in the near future.

Michael McKay and Liz Swanson, Architecture, won the Park Avenue Design Competition sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Florida Southwest and the United Arts Council of Collier County in Marco Island, Fla. This is the second international design competition the pair has won this year. The two were recognized at an awards ceremony in September at the AIA Florida Southwest Design Conference.

Philip Palmgreen, Communications, will be awarded the 2005 Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship given by the National Communication Association. The award honors scholars who are responsible for authoring bodies of published research and creative scholarship in applied communication. Palmgreen will be recognized at the NCA convention in Boston this November.

John Thelin, Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, was a keynote speaker on "Higher Education in Kentucky: Present and Future" at Eastern Kentucky University's Centennial Celebration Conference.

Kathy Walsh-Piper, UK Art Museum, was selected to attend the invitation-only Acadia Summer Art Program in Mount Desert Island, Maine. The Acadia Summer Art Program is a think-tank of artists, museum directors, curators, architects, musicians, writers, and scholars who gather every summer to share and inspire ideas and collaborations.

Robert Reed III, assistant professor of economics in UK’s Gatton College of Business and Economics, co-authored an article that was selected by “Economic Inquiry,” a well-respected general economics journal, as the recipient of its 2005 Best Article Award. The journal’s editorial team cited the work of Reed, together with J. Battacharya, Iowa State University and Casey Mulligan, University of Chicago, for their work on “Labor Market Search and Optimal Retirement Policy.” Reed and his colleagues received the award, which carries with it a $1,000 prize, at the annual meeting of the Western Economic Association International in San Francisco, Calif.
