Awards logoThe Donovan Scholars Program in the University of Kentucky’s Council on Aging has awarded four scholarships for 2004 to UK graduate students working toward their doctorates in gerontology. The four graduate students are: SHANNON L. BOWLES, a Kentucky native who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music therapy from the University of Kansas; TAMARA CRANFILL, who has a bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology from UK and began working on a doctorate in rehabilitation sciences at UK in 2001; TRAVONIA BROWN-HUGHES, a native of Chesapeake, Va., who received her Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University in Hampton, Va., and a Master of Science degree in community health from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.; and LAVONA TRAYWICK, a gerontology coordinator and instructor at the University of Arkansas before she entered the doctoral program in gerontology at UK.

CYNTHIA RAEHL , founding chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Texas Tech School of Pharmacy, has been selected to receive the 2004 Paul F. Parker Award from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. The honor is presented annually to a past resident of the UK Pharmacy Residency Program or to an individual associated with the success of the program who has displayed sustained contribution to the profession in practice, teaching or research.

SCOTT DIAMOND , assistant professor of physiology, College of Medicine, and member of the Markey Cancer Center’s research team, was awarded the American Cancer Society’s Heart of Relay Award for research promotion at the division and national levels.

GRIFF L. THOMAS , service director, Environmental Services, recently earned the American Hospital Association designation of Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional. The CHESP is a national credential that distinguishes an individual as being among the elite in a critical field of health care management. Fewer than 300 managers nationwide hold this distinction.

A novel study opening a new frontier in the war against hypertension was performed by DR. PETER ABADIR, a resident physician at East Kentucky Family Practice Residency, part of the Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine at the Center for Rural Health in Hazard. The results of the study, “ Angiotensin AT2 Receptor-Bradykinin B2 Receptor Functional Heterodimerization: A Marriage of Convenience,” will be published in Hypertension, a journal of the American Heart Association.

GINNY SPRANG , associateprofessor in the UK College of Social Work, and OTTO KAAK and ALAN BRENZEL,bothprofessors in the Department of Psychiatry, UK College of Medicine, presented “Contemporary Traumas and Behavioral Health Providers” at the Mental Health Institute in Louisville, Ky.

Retirement logo PATRICIA KUNZ HOWARD , UK Hospital Emergency Department staff development specialist and clinical research protocol manager for cardiovascular nursing, UK College of Nursing, has been named president-elect for the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). ENA is the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and injury prevention.

ROB SPRANG , director of the College of Medicine’s Kentucky TeleCare program, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Center for Telemedicine Law in Washington, D.C. CTL is a non-profit educational corporation developed in 1995 to overcome the legal and regulatory barriers to telemedicine.

VICTORIA BRADLEY , director of patient information and project director for enterprise-wide integrated clinical information system implementation at the UK Hospital, was elected to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Board of Directors. She will serve a three-year term, beginning July 2005.

Housing logoA constituency from the UK COLLEGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH recently attended the 132nd annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in Washington, D.C. More than 14,000 public health professionals from around the world shared the latest in public health research and practice. Many of the more than 900 scientific sessions focused on the meeting's theme, "Public Health and the Environment."
