Awards
The Physical Plant Division Team of the Quarter for 2004 fourth quarter is the PPD Paint Shop: KEITH DEMUS, JAMES GAUNCE, SAM ROE, DWIGHT KENDRICK, JAMES HOLLOMAN, and MICHAEL LYVERS.

The 2004 Physical Plant Division Team of the Year was selected from the winners of the 2004 Employees of the Quarter. The winner for 2004 is Custodial Services Team 8A: ELAINE GREENE, custodial worker supervisor; NELHRIE HALIBURTON, custodial worker; ARTHUR JOHNSON, custodial worker; and THOMAS JOHNSON, utility worker.

The College of Social Work Field Education Office is participating in a Juvenile Accountability Block Grant with the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy. Three Master of Social Work candidates, currently placed in Public Defenders’ offices, assist attorneys in making pre-trial dispositions in juvenile cases. In addition, LYNN GUERIN, clinical faculty, is working with the division director of DPA to develop a training manual that will be used by DPA to train 80 juvenile court attorneys in how to work with social workers. Training will be provided in June.

DAVID BIAGI , director of the School of Architecture, and BRUCE SWETNAM, associate professor in the School of Architecture, along with other team members Marta Canaves and Marilys Nepomechie, both of Florida International University, and Michaele Pride-Wells, University of Cincinnati, received the Collaborative Practice Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The award honors the best practices in school-based community outreach programs and demonstrates how faculty, students, and community/civic clients work to realize common objectives.

The National Press Photographers Association decided to extend its relationship with the School of Journalism and Telecommunications as the host of its annual storytelling workshop. NPPA will be with the school through 2010.

The International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame has inducted the late NOFFLET D. WILLIAMS, former associate dean for distance learning at the University of Kentucky. The citation praises Williams as “a pioneer in the application of telecommunications to education and the development of distance learning on a state, national and international level.” From 1974 to 1995, Williams worked at UK, where he was involved in the use of an experimental NASA satellite to bring education to isolated communities in the Appalachian region stretching from New York to Mississippi.

MIHO NOZAKI , postdoctoral scholar in the UK College of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, has been awarded a prestigious grant by The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the Japan National Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Nozaki specializes in age-related macular degeneration research and will use the $16,000 grant to fund a project titled “ Proteome Mapping of Cc12-/ and Ccr2-/- Mouse Models of AMD.”

Recently, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society awarded the Nursing Informatics Leadership Award to VICTORIA BRADLEY, director of patient information and project director for enterprise-wide integrated clinical information system implementation at UK Hospital. The HIMSS mission focuses on “leading change in the health care information and management systems field through knowledge sharing, advocacy, collaboration, innovation and community affiliations.” The awards honor individuals as well as collaborative efforts related to education, publications and advocacy.

The February UK Hospital Employee of the Month is Wanda Adkins , R.N., Teleservices Manager, Marketing. The March UK Hospital Employee of the Month is Craig Silvey, IS Technical Support, MCIS.

DAVID LABELLE
, part-time photojournalism faculty and adviser for the Kentucky Kernel, has produced a new book titled, “The Great Picture Hunt 2.” LaBelle shares advice on the art and ethics of feature picture hunting and showcases work from his 35 years in the business. The book is being published by Kernel Press Inc.

JAMES CAMPBELL
, professor of music and director of percussion studies, UK College of Fine Arts, recently presented a lecture "Campbell's Percussion Soup: All the Ingredients for Healthy Percussionists" at the Kentucky Music Educators' Convention in Louisville and at the South Carolina Music Educators' Convention in Charleston.
