publications Francie Chassen-Lopez, associate professor of history, has published “From Liberal to Revolutionary Oaxaca” (Penn State Press; August 2004), which aims at finally setting Mexican history free of stereotypes about the southern state of Oaxaca, long portrayed as a traditional and backward society resistant to the forces of modernization and marginal to the Revolution.

awards Richard C. Haydon, professor of surgery, Division of Otolaryngology, has earned the Honor Award by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The award will be presented Sept. 19 at the opening ceremony of the annual meeting of the AAO-HNS Foundation in New York City.

The UK Hospital Employee of the Month for August is Marilyn Humphrey, staff assistant in Performance Improvement and Patient Safety.

The Resident of the Month for August is Dr. Rob Ferguson in Plastic Surgery.

presentations Tom Guskey , professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation, has been invited to present a Distinguished Lecture at Harvard University this fall. The lecture is part of a series of talks sponsored by the Hope Foundation. The general theme of the 2004 series is “courageous leadership for school success.” The lecture will be given Oct. 19 in the Gutman Conference Center on the Harvard University campus.

Kevin Holm-Hudson, assistant professor, School of Music, presented his paper "Disney's Fantasia and Art-Music Polystylism in English Progressive Rock" at the Eighth Congress of the International Association for Semiotic Studies in Lyon, France. Recently, Holm-Hudson also presented papers at the Conference on Interdisciplinary Musicology in Graz, Austria, and the Lithuanian Composers Union Fourth Annual International Music Theory Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania. He also studied manuscripts and sketches of Lithuanian composer/artist M. K. Ciurlionis at the composer's archives in Kaunas, Lithuania. Holm-Hudson has been named the 2004 commissioned composer for the Kentucky Music Teachers Association; his composition "Kali Yuga" for eight saxophones, three percussionists, and electric bass will be premiered at this year's state conference at Murray State University in October.
