PETER D. LITTLE , professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology, has been named joint winner of the Royal Anthropological Society’s Amaury Talbot Prize for African Anthropology (2003) for his book, “ Somalia: Economy without State,” published by Indiana University Press.
MARY ROSEMAN, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, was named the 2004 Outstanding Dietitian of the Year for Kentucky by the American Dietetic Association. Roseman, who has been a registered dietitian for 25 years, was honored for her distinguished contributions to the profession. In addition, Roseman and colleague Barbara Ashburn together received the 2004 Special Contribution Award from the Bluegrass District of the Kentucky Dietetics Association for research and education interventions in food safety for seniors.
JEREMY HALL , a doctoral student in the Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, has been selected in a national competition to receive the Pi Alpha Alpha Outstanding Ph.D. Student Paper Award for his paper "Understanding State Economic Development Policy in the New Economy: A Theoretical Foundation and Empirical Examination of State Innovation in the U.S."
EDWARD T. JENNINGS JR. , public policy and administration professor, has been honored with the Charles H. Levine Memorial Award for Excellence in Public Administration from the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) and the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. Jennings has been extensively published, co-authoring and co-editing four books, including “Meeting the Challenges of Performance Oriented Government,” “From Nation to States,” “The Revitalization of the Public Service,” and “Distribution, Utilization, and Innovation in Health Care.”
ANNA TAYLOR will be retiring after 34 years at the University of Kentucky, 30 years in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. There will be a professorship named in her honor at the University of Kentucky, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. ROBERT OLSON , professor of Middle East politics, was one of the main speakers at the International Kurdish Conference: Statelessness, Resistance and Survival sponsored by the California Institute for Integral Studies, San Francisco, Calif. Olson delivered his paper titled “Kurdistan-Iraq and the Consolidation of Kurdish Nationalism: 2003-2004.” Olson is author of “ Turkey and Iran, 1979p2004: Revolution, Ideology, War, Coups and Geopolitics (2004).”
The College of Health Sciences will hold its annual Convocation addressed " Kentucky: Leadership in Health Sciences Education" Monday, Nov. 1, from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in the Commons, room 127 of the college. Dr. Thomas C. Robinson, dean of the college, will be giving the convocation.
AL CROSS , interim director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications, was elected last week to a three-year term as a director of the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation. Cross previously served on the foundation board before, during and after his one-year term as president of the foundations parent organization, the Society of Professional Journalists
DR. DEBRA K. MOSER of the UK College of Nursing was recently made a member of the board of directors of the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses [AAHFN], a national nonprofit professional nursing association whose mission is to optimize successful outcomes for heart failure patients by uniting health care professionals, patients and families in support and advancement of heart failure practice, education and research.
DR. LARRY L. CUNNINGHAM, JR., assistant professor of Oral Health Science, has been accepted as faculty in AO ASIF ( Arbeitsgemeinschaft fűr Osteosynthesefragen - Association for the Study of Internal Fixation), an international association for the study and treatment of trauma.
