LAN CHI LUU and ELIZABETH C. KONZ, both doctoral candidates in the University of Kentucky Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences , have each been awarded Clinical Research Feasibility Funds (CReFF) through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Research Resources and the UK General Clinical Research Center. They will each receive an award of $20,000 to support pilot research leading to data for future NIH or other peer-reviewed grant proposals.
DR. GREGORY J. DAVIS , director of the division of forensic pathology and the associate director of residency training in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, College of Medicine, received the 2004 William L. Kuehn, Ph.D., Outstanding Communicator Award during the annual meeting of the College of American Pathologists. The award is presented to a member of the college who has made outstanding communications contributions, strengthening the image of pathology and educating the public about vital wellness issues.
KENNETH B. ROBERTS , University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy dean, received the President's Award, and assistant dean JOHN ARMITSTEAD was named Pharmacist of the Year during the Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists (KSHP) Fall Meeting held Sept. 22 and 23 in Lexington.
GARY W. SHANNON , geography professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, and JASON WILLOUGHBY, geography research assistant in the College of Arts and Sciences, have co-published a paper titled “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Asia: A Medical Geographic Perspective.” The article was published in a 2004 edition of “Eurasian Geography and Economics.” The article looks at outbreaks of SARS in many cities and provinces of China and several other Asian countries including Vietnam and Taiwan.
RICHARD LABUNSKI , associate professor in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications in the College of Communications and Information Studies, has written an article that has been picked up by History News Service (HNS), which syndicates editorial page commentaries to newspapers. The article, titled “When Congress Tampers with the Court’s Independence,” criticizes the U.S. House for voting to remove a case dealing with the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance from the Supreme Court’s appellate jurisdiction. CATHY S. HUNT, director of student services, College of Communications and Information Studies; MARY K. KELLY, web coordinator, The Graduate School; KERRI A. SCANNELL, Fine Arts librarian, Fine Arts Library; TIMOTHY A. SMITH, professor, Department of Behavioral Sciences; and HENRY C. VASCONEZ, professor and chief, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery; will be joining 20 others in the choir from the Cathedral of Christ the King to perform vocal music in Italy. The choir will give a concert at Church of the Gesu in Rome on Oct. 24. On Oct. 27 they will present “O Sacrum Convivium” (R. Remondi) for Pope John Paul II and will provide the music for a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

DR THOMAS H. PAULY, professor in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and neonatologist at the UK Children's Hospital died Oct. 4 of cancer. Pauly served as the director of neonatology, associate chairman for the Department of Pediatrics, and the medical director at UK Children's Hospital during his tenure at UK. Pauly is survived by his wife, the former Julie Kathleen Sullivan, Lexington; daughter Allison, 25; and sons Mack, 13, and Sam, 11.
