Retirement logo GLORIA ALLAIRE, lecturer of Italian in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures, College of Arts and Sciences, was invited to read a paper titled "The Narrative World of Andrea da Barberino" as part of a special two-day conference "Florence on the Eve of the Renaissance" held at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Oct. 22-23.

A paper by D. Allan Butterfield, The Alumni Professor of Biological and Physical Chemistry;
Director, Center of Membrane Sciences; and Faculty Associate, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, appears in the October 2004 Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. In an NIH-funded study, Butterfield uncovered evidence supporting the claim that vitamin E may stem the progress of Alzheimer’s Disease. The study identified methionine in the human amyloid beta peptide as a key contributor to Alzheimer’s disease. Butterfield demonstrated that in the animal form of the peptide, the introduction of the antioxidant vitamin E slowed the destruction of brain cells as it appears to in the human form. These results provide new insights into the mechanisms of action of human amyloid beta peptide, which many researchers believe causes the damage seen in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients.
