An
article written by GANG CAO, an associate professor in the Department
of Physics and Astronomy, UK College of Arts and Sciences, is
included in IoP Select, a special collection of journal articles
chosen by the Institute of Physics for their novelty, significance
and potential impact. The article, “Orbitally-driven behaviour:
Mott transitions, quantum oscillations and colossal magnetoresistance
in bilayered Ca3Ru2O7,” considers new measurements in a
material indicative of a new type of electronic order and a novel
mechanism for "collosal magnetoresistance"— extreme
sensitivity of a sample's electrical resistance to magnetic field,
which is useful for magnetic readouts such as in computers.
