Bike Questions

We never had to register our bicycles before. Why do we have to do this now?

Bicycle registration provides a way for PTS to provide information and implement bicycle policy, thereby developing and improving the bicycling experience campus-wide. Registration has benefits for all members of the UK community, not just cyclists.

What are the benefits to cyclists?

Bicycle registration has a number of benefits to cyclists.

  • Similar programs on other campuses have decreased bicycle thefts.
  • Registration helps make cycling a more viable alternative on campus.
  • Bicycle registration will reduce costs to cyclists by allowing PTS to contact owners of illegally parked or abandoned bikes, and by providing a record of registration in the case of theft for insurance purposes.
  • Finally, registration will help to better educate and enforce the rules that will make bicycling at UK a positive experience for everyone.

I don’t ride a bike. How will this benefit me?

As more members of the University community turn to cycling, the demand for parking will be reduced. Increased bicycle use will also aid in shrinking Lexington’s carbon footprint. When that happens everyone wins - our campus, our community and our environment.
