Spring Weather Bring Bikes to Campus

Spring has sprung, and bikes are popping up all over campus. If you choose to ride your bicycle to campus, please take some time to review UK’s bicycle regulations. Bike racks are located in front of most every residence hall and classroom building, with nearly 2,500 bicycle spaces on campus. Just like cars, bikes can be impounded if they are parked illegally. Don’t chain bikes to a bench, tree, or telephone pole. Just use a bike rack.

Please visit www.uky.edu/Parking/transportation-bicycle-info.html for more information, including the University's bicycle regulations.

Online Ride-Matching Service

University of Kentucky Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) is pleased to announce the launch of AlterNetRides, a new online ride-sharing service. The new program will connect UK faculty, staff, students, and guests who wish to coordinate carpools, and, in the process, save gas and money and decrease their impact on the environment.

UK AlterNetRides is an online program; those interested in ride-sharing will need a valid e-mail address to participate. Users will be able to search for those with similar transportation needs by time of day, frequency, and location. By communicating through the AlterNetRides Web site, personal information such as e-mail address and phone number remain confidential unless the user chooses to share them with another rider.

The ride-matching service is provided by PTS free of charge. The only costs are those that the members of the carpool agree to share, such as fuel or vehicle maintenance costs. Carpools with three or more riders are also eligible to purchase a carpool parking permit. The service can be used to find rides on a daily basis, a one-time ride or anything in between.

PTS is excited to bring AlterNetRides to the UK community. With gas prices and environmental concerns both on the rise, the program is a good fit for the University. Visit www.uky.edu/parking/transportation-ridematch.html for more information.

Summer Parking & Transit Changes

During the summer months, demand for student parking is greatly reduced. As a result, Parking & Transportation Services does not control many of the student areas for permits during this period.

In general, all single use Residential (R) and Commuter (C) lots and the Commonwealth Stadium Red (K) lot are off control from May 3 through August 24. All joint use Employee/Commuter (E/C), Employee/Residential (E/R), and Employee/Student (E/K) parking lots, and the Commonwealth Stadium Blue (K) lot will remain on control for permits during the summer months.

Visit the Summer Parking page (http://www.uky.edu/Parking/parking-breaks-summer.html) for more information on summer parking.

PTS began operating a summer bus route on May 5. The bus service will run for both the 4-week Intersession and the 8-week Summer Session. Due to the Washington Avenue street closure, the Summer Break bus route will be re-routed, stopping at the Huguelet Drive side of Scovell Hall, instead of Washington Avenue. Additionally, the Donovan Hall stop will be eliminated.

For a complete bus map and schedule, visit the Summer Break Route page: http://www.uky.edu/Parking/transportation-summer-break-route.html.

PTS Partners with LexTran to Offer Bus Pass Trial

University of Kentucky Parking & Transportation Services (PTS) is pleased to announce a partnership with LexTran which will allow UK employees with valid parking permits to test-ride the new LexTran 41-X Commuter Express Route. The route runs between Wal-Mart on Nicholasville Road and the Transit Center on Vine Street, with stops at the Kentucky Clinic and UK HealthCare Good Samaritan Hospital.

From July 1 to August 31, current E-permit holders will be eligible to swap their parking permit for a MetroLex 30-day bus pass. The employee will remain on payroll deduction, and may make the switch at any of the three PTS offices on campus: Parking Structure #6 (721 Press Avenue), Parking Structure #5 (next to Kennedy Book Store), or the HealthCare Parking Structure (110 Transcript). The MetroLex pass is good for 30 days from the first day it is used; employees may choose to start their trial month anytime between July 1 and August 31. At any time during the trial period, employees may choose to switch back to their parking permit if the MetroLex pass does not meet their transportation needs.

Participating employees will receive two complimentary scratch-off permits to be used if they need to drive to campus during their trial month. Participants will also be eligible for a guaranteed ride back to their vehicle in emergency situations. Once the trial month is over, employees may opt to turn in their bus pass and get their permit back or to opt out of the permit program and purchase a bus pass from LexTran.

For more information on the Commuter Express Route trial, call the PTS offices at (859) 257-5757. For a 41-X Express map and schedule, visit http://lextranonthemove.org.
