Speaker and Visitor Program
A key component of the Patterson School experience is our rich speaker and visitors program. Policymakers, professors, corporate officials, and political activists — from the United States and abroad — are brought to campus not only to speak, but also to actually meet our students. Many guest speakers make two presentations: a major session open to the public and another (frequently off the record) small event with just Patterson School students. Indeed, those experts participating in the annual Fall Conference normally do no open-to-the-public events. These more intimate, relaxed sessions facilitate greater candor and deeper insights. Finally, visitors usually dine during their stay with a small Patterson School group (six to eight people — primarily students), enabling close personal contact and increased networking possibilities.
A signature event each year is the Patterson School's Vince Davis Lecture. This brings to Lexington leading policymakers and scholars working at the forefront of foreign and security policy. The 2009 speaker was renowned diplomatic historian George C. Herring. Admiral Mike Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke in 2008.
In addition to Patterson School events, many notable guests to the University of Kentucky and this area give major addresses on political and international themes. Recent examples include former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, former Indian President Abdul Kalam, former USSR President and Nobel Laureate Mikhail Gorbachev, former Secretary of State and CJCS Colin Powell, actress Ashley Judd (on her work as a "Goodwill Global Ambassador" for YouthAids), and CNN international correspondent Christiane Amanpour.
Finally, the Patterson School's close relationships with the Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship, the World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, and the Kentucky World Trade Center provide students with additional opportunities for professional engagement and growth.
