To make
this easy, I will list what is the same about this course, what has
changed, and what is new... |
|
|
|
What is the same?
-
It is a one month rotation, this year the course
runs from May 6 until June 3.
-
The purpose and course outcomes.
-
Your role as a mentor and a coach.
-
The type of assignments.
-
Student required work hours (75% or 30 hours per week
in direct patient care and dispensing and 25% or 10 hours per week
working on assignments - since computer access and work space may be
limited in your pharmacy, it is acceptable for the student to work
on assignments at home.)
-
The expectation of students to be professional and
maintain HIPAA compliance.
-
The course is still graded pass/fail.
-
The Patient Care Project Proposal to improve patient
care at your pharmacy - got a project that you just haven't had time
to research and complete?
|
|
|
|
What has changed?
-
EPPE (Early Pharmacy Practice Experience) is now
called IPPE I (Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience I.)
-
Mix of community and hospital sites has changed to
all community pharmacy sites. After their PY2 year, all students
will have a one month rotation in a hospital pharmacy.
-
Paper evaluations have changed to on-line in the PEMS
(Pharmacy Education Management System.) More on this change can be
found in the free 1-hour continuing education course at
http://cbf.cecentral.com/activity/2022 I recommend that
you complete this CE program, because it will make logging in and
completing the student evaluation much easier.
-
There are specific discussion topics for you to
review with the student, so you may want to plan some time to spend
one-on-one with the student.
-
There is a revised weekly schedule of activities to
help the student stay on track with their assignments.
-
Students will spend less time on written assignments
and more time on the Blackboard course site blogging and
communicating with other students in their class.
|
|
|
|
What is new?
-
Use of PEMS for student evaluations.
-
A structured midpoint evaluation to be conducted at
the end of the second week or beginning of the third week to be
discussed with the student and documented in PEMS.
-
A new final evaluation form in PEMS that focuses on
aspects of prescription dispensing, your observation of a student
patient counseling session, a check-off form to grade the Patient
Care Project Proposal, and a section to attest to having specific
topic discussions with the student.
-
In the Appendix of the IPPE I Manual, a description
of the PY1 curriculum is given so that you can be aware of the
educational background that your student has.
