Georgette Howard
Ph.D.

Associate Professor
Pharmaceutical Sciences Division

Dr. Howard's research in the area of neuroendocrinology focuses on the role of neuropeptides in the development of obesity and diabetes. The sympathetic neuropeptide, galanin, is an important neuromodulator of food intake and insulin secretion. Current research focuses on the tissue-specific and aberrant regulation of galanin gene expression during obesity-associated diabetes in
the ob/ob mouse mutant. Molecular techniques such as electrophoretic mobility shift assays, cell culture transfections, and RNA analysis are being utilized in order to map critical regulatory elements involved in regulating galanin gene expression in both normal and pathophysiological states.
