Adult Dosing Guidelines

For treatment of lice infestation, wash hair with regular shampoo and rinse with water. Towel dry. Apply a sufficient amount of the Nix to saturate the hair and scalp. Leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Repeat treatment in 7-10 days in order to remove any newly hatched lice. A separate product for nit removal is necessary.

 Pediatric Dosing Guidelines

  • Treatment for children is the same as for adults.

 Triage Questions About Treatment or Related Issues

Has patient tried to treat lice infestation before? If so, make sure it has been 7-10 days before retreatment. If treatment did not work, recommend treating fomites such as clothes, bed, toys, etc. May want to ask location of infestation. This product cannot be used for the treatment of pubic lice.

 General Information

Permethrin is a synthesized pyrethroid. This class causes disruption of nerve cell membranes, which affects the sodium channel current and paralyzed the pediculocyte. Patients with hypersensitivity to any synthetic pyrethroid, plants of the chrysanthemum family, or any component of this product should use caution if they use this product, if a reaction occurs, discontinue use of the product and contact physician.

 Adverse Reactions/Side Effects
Mild temporary itching, burning, stinging, tingling, numbness, erythema, edema, and rash. Pruritis, erythema, and edema are symptoms of lice infestation; application of Nix may exacerbate these conditions. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth. May need to use protective eyewear such as goggles to avoid eye irritation. Do not repeat use any sooner than 7 days.
