General Information The ingredients of the Step 2 and nit removal products include formic acid, as well as a number of enzymes that serve to help dissolve the chitin forming glue that attaches the nit to the hair shaft. May want to use some type of eye covering such as goggles to avoid eye contact. Home should be vacuumed thoroughly to remove lice. All washable clothing and toys should be washed in hot water and dried in the hot air cycle for at least 20 minutes. Things that can’t be washed should be placed in a plastic bag and sealed for at least 2 weeks. All combs and brushes should be cleaned in hot water at a temperature greater than 130° F for 5 to 10 minutes. Examine the patients’ head under a bright light to ensure removal of all nits to prevent reinfestation. Should also caution against sharing of personal items that would come into contact with another persons’ hair or pubic area. Also advise frequent checking of school age children’s head.
