Adult Dosing Guidelines

Take 1-2 tablespoons four times a day. Gaviscon should be taken after meals and at bedtime

Pediatric Dosing Guidelines

Take 1-2 tablespoons four times a day. Gaviscon should be taken after meals and at bedtime

Triage Questions About Treatment or Related Issues

  • Does the patient have kidney disease?
  • Is the patient currently taking Pepto-Bismol?
  • Is the patient currently using a product containing simethicone?
  • Has this problem persisted for more than 2 weeks?
  • Has the patient noticed blood in their stool or vomit?

General Information

  • MOA: increase pH of stomach to decrease irritation from excess acid also sodium alginate forms viscous raft of nonirritating material that floats atop stomach contents so refluxate consists of nonirritant material rather than acids and enzymes and may also provide an actual barrier to reflux
  • The patient must remain upright after use to ensure the action of sodium alginate.
  • Tablets must be chewed thoroughly.
  • Do not take with Pepto-Bismol or simethicone containing products because they decrease the effectiveness.
  • Take with full glass of water.
  • Shake suspensions well.
  • May refrigerate suspensions but do not freeze.
  • Separate doses of other medications by 1 hour before and 2 hours after to ensure absorption.
  • Do not use longer than 2 weeks without physician approval.
  • Do not use in children less than 2 years.
  • Do not use if on sodium restricted diet unless advised by physician.
  • Patients with kidney disease should not use this product.

Adverse Reactions/Side Effects

  • Hypermagnesia in renal disease resulting in changes in cardiac function, hypotension, respiratory depression.
  • Hyperaluminemia resulting in osteomalacia and encephalopathy.
  • Hypophosphatemia resulting in anorexia, muscle weakness, and osteomalacia.
  • Kidney stones
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
