General Information
- MOA: In the stomach histamine 2 acts on histamine 2-receptors on the parietal cells resulting in acid secretion. Famotidine, which is the active ingredient in Pepcid competitively blocks these receptors, hence inhibiting increased gastric acid secretion.
- The onset of action usually is about an hour and may last up to 6-12 hours, suppressing all phases of gastric secretion especially the basal and nocturnal acid secretion rather than meal-stimulated acid secretion.
- If the patient is pregnant or nursing they should consult a physician before use.
- Famotidine should not be taken with any other acid reducers.
- The maximum dose should not be taken for more than 2 weeks without first consulting a physician.
- In the cause of accidental over dose seek the help of a poison control center.
