Triage Questions About Treatment or Related Issues Does the patient have diabetes? If so, consult with your doctor before using. Is the patient pregnant or nursing a baby? If so, contact your doctor because it has a pregnancy risk factor of C. Does the patient have any allergies, such as Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride, that would prevent them from taking this medication? Is the patient taking any over the counter or other prescription medications, such as MAO inhibitors? They may need to be discontinued or modified. General Information Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors in arterioles of nasal mucosa to produce vasoconstriction. Therapeutic effects begin within 5-10 minutes and lasts 5-12 hours. Do not exceed 2 doses in a 24 hour period. Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline or any component, heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, long-standing bronchial asthma, diabetes, or difficulty in urination. Rebound congestion may occur with extended use, longer than 3 days, so do not use after 3 days. If symptoms persist, insomnia, hypertension, headache, or irregular heartbeat occur, discontinue use and contact your health care practitioner. Do not take with MAO inhibitors, as it may increase their toxicity. If ingested, contact Poison Control immediately.
