Dosage Forms (Robins Consumer)
Syrup, Guaifenesin: 100 mg per 5 mL

Adult Dosing Guidelines

  • For adults and children > 12: 10 mL (200 mg) every 4 hours.
  • Do not exceed 120mL (2400 mg) per day.

Pediatric Dosing Guidelines

  • For children 6 to 12: 100 mg (5 mL) every 4 hours.
  • Do not exceed 1200 mg (60 mL) per day.
  • For children 2 to 6: 50 to 100 mg (2.5 to 5 mL) every 4 hours.
  • Do not exceed 600 mg (30 mL) per day.

 

Triage Questions About Treatment or Related Issues

Robitussin is used to treat nonproductive coughing and chest congestion due to the common cold, infection, or allergies. Drink extra fluids during use to help relieve chest congestion. To ensure proper dosing, measure the liquid with a special dosing cup or spoon, not with a regular teaspoon. If cough worsens, lasts more than a week, or is accompanied by fever, rash or persistent headache, consult your physician. Do not use for continual cough due to smoking, asthma, or emphysema, or when cough has excessive mucus. Do not use in children under 2 years of age. Do not use if you are sensitive to guaifenesin. If pregnant, consult your physician or pharmacist.

 

General Information

Guaifenesin is an expectorant that loosens phlegm and increases the lubrication of your lungs allowing for a productive cough and decreased congestion of the chest. This product contains 3.5% alcohol.


Adverse Reactions/Side Effects
No serious side effects are expected from guaifenesin therapy. The most common are dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, with headache and rash also reported.

There are no known interactions between guaifenesin and other medicines. Talk to your physician or pharmacist before taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines with guaifenesin. May be taken with food.
